Default Re: Is there value in this river?

First of all, I like your play pre-flop, and on the flop and turn. Well done.

On the river, you need to take this n00b to valuetown... look at the action so far, he could be calling you down with a wide range of weak holdings. That's why I'm surprised by your comment that it was a bad river, what do you think he has, A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]? Not bloody likely, since you have two aces and he would've bet such a good draw. Also, even if he had top pair on the flop, he probably won't believe the king helped you.

Now we just have to size the value bet. His tiny donkbet on the turn (for 10% of the pot!!) makes very little sense from the point of view of proper play, and constitutes very mild but senseless aggression, but does suggest that he might like to see a showdown. Considering his call of a pot-sized bet on the turn, and the fact that he is the big stack at your table (probably through some really lucky hand), it's time to relieve him of some of his winnings. Based on the size of the pot (almost twice your remaining stack), it's time to move in, and hope he calls. Note that even a good player would feel obligated to call in this spot, getting 3-to-1 on his money, with anything but the most hopeless of hands. Of course, most good players would've played the turn much differently.
