It's responsible, adult debt (plus the deductions will nicely offset taxation on poker winnings...), rather than "I'm broke but still need beer" debt.

This is so true. Too often Americans (and prolly other cultures) assume that debt is bad. The majority of debt is not good, but some of it is. Debt is just like assets in that it is a financial tool. Nothing more, nothing less. Congrats on ridding yourself of revolving debt!
