If the doubles/splits are returned when the dealer has a blackjack, then it is mathematically equivalent to peek; there is no change to the house edge. In Europe, under no-peek, the house keeps doubles/splits when the dealer has blackjack, which is the reason the house edge goes up.

If you don't have blackjack detectors, the reason to use South Point's procedure (rather than the one at the San Remo, which is faster) is that the dealer gets an opportunity to collude with the players if (s)he knows specifically what the hole card is.
