Speaking as one who used to be able to run a sub-6 mile but now is probably somewhere in the 8:30-9 minute range I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.
I don't think he realizes how relatively fast a 10 minute mile is. For someone who isn't trained in race-walking I'm also guessing that trying to impersonate the technique will kill his calves before the mid-way point...and that's assuming he's actually anywhere close to being on-pace by the middle and I don't think he will be.
Definitely get someone else to make sure he doesn't cheat and go into running mode. I don't think he can do it without practicing or training for it.
