Well you need to decide how nice of a chip you want, and how much you're willing to spend. Chip prices will range from .04 to $1.50 each depending on the quality.
I paid an arm and a leg for mine cause I wanted nice ones.
I recommend you check out the chip reviews at homepokertourney.com, find some you like, and get samples before you make a decision to buy a whole set.

I am a regular at ChipTalk.net and I concur with Steve. The usual process is that guys first get some cheap plastic "Dice" chips for something like 5-20¢/chip and realize after a while that they would like something nicer. This is why he suggests getting samples 1st. There are many options for a 3 denomination set like you are suggesting. The first thing you need to do is figure out how nice a set of chips you want. This will be a balancing act between price and quality. The best two sites to discuss and learn about poker chips are the two that steve mentioned.
