I saw this article, but the facts don't match up. Let's look at the last few champions and see who they played non-conference.
2006- Florida. No one of note out of conference, but in a very tough SEC.
2005- Texas. Weak conference, but played @ tOSU who finished #4 in the country.
2004- USC. Played VT, ND, BYU. Pac-10 was a tough conference as well
2003- LSU. Weak out-of-conference schedule (Arizona), tough SEC.
2002- Ohio State. Played Texas Tech, Washington State. Decent Big-10 conference that year.
2001- Miami. Penn State, Florida State, Washington. Big East was decent that year.
Every year, the champions proved themselves with tons quality wins. Occasionally someone can luckbox in without a big win, but its the exception, not the rule.
