he has a couple short story collections that are just phenomenal. lots of sad/absurd magic realism and black humor. he'd probably be my first recommendation for you if you've never read him. pynchon basically came out of hiding to write the blurb for
this book so u really cant go wrong

i think i heard about this from a DFW interview, its experimental fiction, short segments of an interior monologue from a woman who may be insane or may be the last person alive on earth. really beautiful and heartbreaking
