I would hope that anyone that has done a 101 in logic would see the errors of Descartes way.

Going on Descartes knowledge, in his time, the only thing that could be said is "there is thought therefore there is thinking"!

True but its Descartes lines of thought that have been so influential not his conclusions.

Also unsuccesful attacks at a problem can be very illuminating and useful (in as far as philosophy is useful). Descartes work on knowledge and dualism are two examples of this.
