You know, the action should probably be stopped on the turn because really that's where the decision comes.

I figured that two bad things can happen by betting the turn. a) I could easily get c/r'd here, sometimes when he has an A, and sometimes when he has air, and I really don't want to have to lay my hand down. b) he folds when I'm lightyears ahead of him. I also figured he might try bluffing the river if I checked through the turn, allowing me to both show my hand down and still get in one big bet.
