If you had like 84o and the board was rainbow then checking is probably a better play because their calling range is more limited and we can get in trouble from a better 8. Plus, checking allows them to catch a 2nd best hand. But with a decent kicker we should be willing to felt this in a unraised pot against a bad player and therefore should bet.
