I've done a bit of used car buying, I've purchased 3 by myself and yes it is a total bitch. Pretty much all of them have had problems.

Your best bet (i don't know what car you like) is to buy a recently used car (2years) like a 350z or nissan maxima for like >20k on craigslist.

THose cars are fairly new, and reliable since they only have 50k miles max on them. THAT IS THE BEST WAY to get a used reliable car, and of course having it checked out at a mechanic b4 you purchase it.
