Feedback is key. If you can bounce 10 chapters or so, one at a time (giving you time to improve and incorporate in between), off an expert disinterested editor, and if you can take the comments in a constructive way (and not "know better"), it will improve you lightning-fast.

I'm thinking about writing a novel next. Once I get some of it on paper, I'm going to look for someone to bounce it off of for comments. Editors work cheap (unfortunately for them), so you should be able to find a good one cheaply to put in some hours with you.
