As others said, different rooms enforce this differently. Some rooms require you to fall below a certain amount before buying more chips while others allow you to top off your stack constantly.
Ask at the specific room you're going to play at. If they allow you to top off constantly, I actually recommend keeping extra chips of your own (off the table) so that you can top off your stack without constantly holding up the game to buy $20 in chips.
