It doesn't need to be "better" - a commercial database must provide huge gobs of flexibility.
A database custom built for poker does not need to be flexible. It need only do exactly what it whas designed to do. The downside is that it takes a lot of resources and expertise to build and maintain it, for a commercial venture those resources are hard to come by - but if you have a Com Sci department in your back pocket, it's not so hard.
