I guess they only count players as "real" Yankees who came up in the Yankee farm system and/or played their entire career with them (Gehrig, Dimaggio, Berra, Ford, Mantle, Munson, Guidry, Mattingly, Jeter, Rivera, Posada). Or came back to them at the end of their careers (Billy Martin, Murcer, Martinez, Pettitte).
It is, of course, beyoond ridiculous. But I remember fans saying the same thing about Roger Maris when he hit 61. Mickey Mantle, who had been booed in previous years, suddently became a "true" Yankee.
As a Yankee fan, I hope Cashman and Steinbrenner pony up immediately after the end of the season. A-Rod will end up as one of the five greatest players ever.
