also you need him to have like K3-K8 which IMO are a lot less likely than a hand like K9+.

I totally agree with this. I think checking is the right play vs this opponent. In the actual hand I acted too quickly and didn't regard my reads enough and bet, and regreted it imidiatly. He called and showed J9.
