I'm not an expert, but I know it depends on which casino. You'll have to bet much more to get comped at the nice hotels than the low end ones. You should be able to ask in advance what you have to bet and for how long to get comps, so ask to speak to someone before you begin playing.
It's not a good idea to bet larger or play longer than you would otherwise to get comps, unless the difference is really minimal.
