anywhere from 1/2" to 1" is fine in my mind. closer to 1/2" is more conservative, closer to 1" more daring. it depends on your taste. don't go less than 1/2", though.
EDIT: and if your wearing a french cuff shirt you're going to have to show at least a 1/2" just to show the cufflinks, oftentimes more. but french cuffs are more "daring" by default, so that's fine.
