I don't see why the two are mutually exclusive.

Edit: I understand that staking is crazy risky because everyone overestimate their edges and most stakers overestimate their stakees' edges as well. I think most times that a winning player stakes another player, the deal is -EV for the backer.

I just don't think making these blanket statements is a good way to protect OP from this problem. He's just gotta analyze things on a case by case basis and be very careful to make sure he's staking a player who can win enough to make whatever deal he gives them profitable.
