Default Re: The Military and Armed Conflict

[ QUOTE ]
1. What do you think of people who join the military, and why?

[/ QUOTE ]
The ideals are fine, the reality is somewhat different.

[ QUOTE ]
2. Do you think armed conflict is sometimes unavoidable?

[/ QUOTE ]
Absolutely. If only for diplomacy - the readiness to go to war stays a lot of hands IMO, and demonstrating this means sometimes actually going to war. Certain nations may have thought twice had the US not been so isolationist in 30s/40s.

3. What avenues can one take if they wish to help in an armed conflict on a soldiering level?

[/ QUOTE ]
None except for the military.

5. What do you think of private security forces? (emphasis on "forces" and not a department store security guard)

[/ QUOTE ]
A dangerous idea. Legitimizing the use of force to private interests, whose first motivation is profit, seems unwise to me. It works ok in one's own country, as they're restrained by custom, but in a war torn country it seems like a recipe for abuse.
