We have a very good idea of the answer. It's been explicitly laid out in a number of publications, most notably the IPCC report. Basically, to avoid *possible* catastrophe we need to cut to pre-1990 levels in the next decade, and continue to reduce.

And it's both doable and advantageous for both national security and the economy. All it takes is massive investment (much less than Iraq, though) and the will to do it.
