My thought is that you can snow as long as you draw two or less on the opening round. When you're drawing three, you pretty much commit yourself to going to showdown.

Right now, I'm winning so many hands without a showdown that I think the ability to pat when they're drawing is worth a lot more than the 7's and smooth 8's you're going to hit drawing three.
