can someone explain to me why short term traders pay more taxes than buy and hold traders?

For U.S. investors, realized gains on assests held for at least one year are taxed as long-term capital gains tax. This is currently capped at 15%. Gains on assets held for less than one year are taxed as ordinary income tax which may or may not be higher than 15% depending on your specific tax situation.
