IMO it goes to intent. She was apparently annoyed at the guy so she thought "hey, I'll do something to make fun of his heritage". That strikes me more as racist intent than ignorance. The bigger point IMO is that he shouldn't sweat something like that, and pick his battles, as was already mentioned.
