I guess special is an arbitrary term. Perhaps unusual would have been a better word, specifically in regards to the existence of intelligent life (unless of course you want to argue that that our universe is unique because there is so little intelligent life. If that were the case, we'd have to scrutinize Drake's Equation a bit more).
