Saying this implies that if you had nothing else to go on, that you are completely justified in showing up to someone's wedding in just a shirt and slacks - which is very wrong. The last wedding I went to, there was exactly one guy who wasn't wearing a suit and he stood out like a sore thumb - the rest of the guys were split about 70-30 between suits and tuxes.

On the other hand, at my sister's wedding I wore a hawaiian shirt, which was her specific request (it was a beach wedding of sorts). Plenty of people have more casual weddings, but I really don't think it's correct to say that the standards have changed. If I had a traditional wedding and you showed up in just a shirt and tie, I'd feel insulted.
