Heh, I guess. GM Terry Ryan was too cheap to go with the greatest amateur pitcher of all time and instead went with the local talent who would be more signable (who was obviously still quite good).
I'm pretty sure not too many people thought Mauer would be this good. Everyone thought Prior was the next coming of Cy Young. And they were right, at least for a few years.

Yeah, all the MN papers were talking about how the Twins simply could not afford to sign Prior, and so there was this big hype campaign that Hometown Joe was the guy we really wanted anyway. I was pretty disappointed about it at the time, because I thought Prior was an absurd, 100% stone cold lock, and that I'd rather not take a guy that I played against in HS instead.
I think its sort of results oriented to claim this was a good pick, but it was also not really Ryan's decision. It was simply impossible to pick Prior, so they got the best of the rest.
