When it seems fairly obvious the villian is chasing to a flush, or straight for that matter, you should just check/call the river unless you got a read. If your betting the river for value you got to think what worse of a hand will he call with. If he calls with two small pair, then bet...if not always check/call. This way you might induce a bluff if he missed and thus you got the value you wanted and you don't lose a bet to a raise when your behind. You also can gain valuable information if he just checks behind by seeing what his starting hand was.
