Hmm, I understand the rationale for betting the flop rather than checking, but what are the disadvantages of the preflop raise?

I figure the BB has random cards, and there is some chance that a raise will cause him to fold, thereby creating dead money. Even if he calls, I do not think I am at an equity disadvantage.
