My work environment is annoyingly loud (i.e., people in offices next to me are loud and obnoxious). I have a pair of
these from Etymotic, and they are amazing. The noise cancelation and sound quality are both superb.
In a poker room, I'd be worried that the noise cancelation might be a bit too effective, though (like for the poor fellow referenced in the OP).
