Re: The Travel Thread
Sometimes the most inspiring travel moments for me have been quiet, solitary ones. The one that comes to mind most of all was in Cairo about 10 years ago. A friend and I were walking around the old city, and came to a mosque where we tipped the guy who was guarding the place a few dollars to let us walk up the minaret. This was a beautiful stone building constructed in the 16th century, and we're walking up this narrow, spiral staircase built more than 400 years earlier, and I look down at the stone steps and see...hieroglyphics. That was pretty amazing, hard to put into words but at that moment you feel like you're in the middle of so much history.
