If the hotel does not have a safe, you're better off taking it with you. And I've heard some stories about how unsafe those safes really are. In any event, I don't use them. Although I WILL use the lock boxes available in casinos. Those are safe.

Another tip is if you feel nervous cashing out, you'll look nervous and perhaps draw attention to yourself and become prey to anyone looking for an easy mark. Although your concern is legitimate, many of the posters are correct that 2k really is no big deal in most casinos and cardrooms. I feel naked if I don't have at least 2 to 3 times that on me at all times, and I've never been followed or mugged, or even looked at funny. Just act like it's no big deal (it isn't), and you'll be fine.
