How Green Was My Valley is a John Ford film from 1940 about a Welsh mining town. It's one of my favorite films and one of the saddest ever. It is famous for beating out Citizen Kane for Best Picture, Best Director, and Cinematography.
Breaking the Waves is another heartbreaker.
