Re: The problem with Sklansky books
I think it's by design that Sklansky doesn't give cookbook, practical guides to beating the games. His philosophy seems to be, "teach a man to fish and he'll never be hungry again". It's a little harder to learn this way, but the dividends are greater.
Personally, I loved having the HoH style books that got me started hitting the ground running, but Sklansky's stuff had a deeper, more lasting effect on my game.
