Following a strict nit regimen as you described can fairly often enough grind out an average 1-1.5ptbb/100 at 100NL. I sometimes play this method when I don't really feel like playing, but I have to put in hands anyways when working with a timeframe (i.e. for a promotion/bonus). My main game now is getting along the lines of 18/15/4, which is showing a much better winrate, and I find the game more challenging/fun when I do that.
