I think you handled it well, and it sounds like others in the game wanted you to stay, as they stood up for you about as diplomatically as possible. The host may have not been quick on his feet at the time, but he apologized afterward and said he'd avoid conflicts.
I doubt the chain smoker is the most beloved there. Don't get involved in any home game drama, but don't worry about your presence there. When invited, go and enjoy.
