I don't think you handled anything poorly here. It was very generous of you to offer to just take your money back even. I guess if you want to deal with the situation and they want to control which of you is allowed which week that is ok, but I really think a home game should have either a "smoking allowed" or "no smoking" rule, and let everyone know which it is.
