Wolfram - The idea behind raising the flop isn't just to fold out AK/AQ, it's that you'll often get a free card on the turn when you're behind (should you choose to take it).

If you get 3bet, yah, most likely you'll have to release.

Most importantly, though - is you need to ask yourself why you are playing a hand like 96 against this opponent. You know he has a tight range, and you're giving up a HUGE preflop equity edge here when playing this hand. If you're only willing to spray some chips around when you make a straight or a flush, you probably should just not play this hand in the first place. You need to be stealing some pots with this kind of junk hand against this nitty opponent to make it worth it - and this is a good spot to try.

If you're not going to mix it up, though, it's totally okay to just fold preflop.
