As with many poker terms over the decade, the term has been misused so often that the meaning has changed.

Originally it meant a cold deck. Not today's "cold deck" that doesn't give you any good cards, but a stacked deck meant to cheat you. So you would be given a very good hand (second nuts), but be beaten. Ace flush vs straight flush. Top full house vs quads.

So when newer players got beat holding an excellent hand, they borrowed the term 'cooler'.
