I would recomend converting to postgres sooner rather than later. I did it with around 50k hands in my DB and it didn't take long at all. I can't remember exactly, but I think it was under two hours.

As far as custom queries go, I've thought about this, but couldn't really come up with anything that useful that I couldn't get from pokertracker.
