I'm guessing that this isn't true any more based on the recent refusal by a casino to let a high stakes gambler cash a 10K chip because he couldn't prove he purchased/owned it. There was a long thread here on it.

That was an isolated incident and hasn't really affected anything. Note that they were trying to get cash for a Bellagio 5k chip at the MGM (I believe, maybe it was the excalibur...), which definitely doesn't happen that often and will turn people away from that casino for that reason. Trust me, if you show up with some flags at the bellagio no one is going to question you. Even if that's true, just tell them you won it playing poker.
