I have done something similar. When I moved to Texas, I went and got a new license right away. However, it took a few weeks for them to make it and send it to me. I had to fly before then. I got to the airport and realized the only license I had was a paper temporary one. I used my student ID and got on without any trouble. This is also post 9/11.
