esad: I have no idea who that girl is or what the story is. I'm afraid I watch very little tv. Brief description of events please?

Katie Couric. She was the host of the morning Today show on NBC. On the Today show she did the typical perky friendly morning girl shtick. She got offered to do the nightly news on CBS and took it, I guess thinking that because she was popular on the Today show she'd make it big in serious news.

From the AP just this last week:

CBS News, Couric hit bottom with smallest viewership in 20 years

It surely wasn't what CBS dreamed about when Katie Couric was hired: the CBS Evening News last week recorded its smallest audience since 1987, and probably many years before that.

CBS executives deny it, but there's a growing feeling within the network that Katie Couric is an expensive, unfixable mistake.

So unfixable that Couric - the first woman to anchor a network nightly newscast solo - may leave CBS Evening News, probably after the 2008 presidential elections, to assume another role at the network, CBS sources say.

This is pretty big news in the US.
