I know two very sharp people that disagree on this (they are both in Vegas and would both be known to many members of this forum if I mentioned them by name). One says exactly what was posted above and one says you make the rake right for the total pot (take $2 from the main pot and then $2 more from the side pot to take $4 on the $40 total pot). I don't know which one is right, but I go with the raking $2 and $1 as gaming is less likely to have a problem with that. Note: under raking is a gaming violation in many jurisdictions, but over raking is a violation in all jurisdictions. Gaming has some regulations in place to protect the casino patron, but also has regulations in place to the casinos from their employees (example the rake should be dropped immediately after the hand rather than held out to color up to a higher denomination chip).
