An alternate take on this line is to check rather than bet to manipulate the size of the pot. We know the opponent isn't folding and is probably drawing cleaner from his actions. So why not check/call and stand pat, the worse case scenario of the opponent checking behind isnt the worst, giving a free card isn't horrible here. Its a line that really confuses the opponent and may encourage him top stand pat behind with a T. The downside is that you have to call river bets vs some opponents, but at least you kept the pot size reasonable when the opponent is drawing to the nuts, and therefore has many outs to beat you.
