I could easily see how the shame/embarrassment of this could make the OP try to ignore it for a couple of decades. I think you're underestimating how uncomfortable people are talking about a (real or perceived) sexual abormality.
BTW, chalk me up as another vote that the OP just has foreskin that's like welded to his shaft with 20-year-old smegma.
