I've heard people say that his defense has gone a bit down hill. Not sure how true it is.

Defense is extremely hard to measure. Even the SABR guys don't have a great metric for it.
That said from everything I've heard Doug Mxchxhczch's defense isn't as good as it used to be, but it's still very very good
