Yes, teaching him to play poker isn't such a bad idea.
If that doesn't work, keep on telling him he's got to stop. If he doesn't listen, tell him again. And again. Sure, he has to live his own life, but you're not much of a friend if you see him making a serious mistake and don't say anything.
