compulsory schooling has long been an intimate part of the State in terms of what subjects are taught (and not taught) and in the way things are taught (view the emphasis on individual achievement, competition, rote memorization, etc in US schools) -- Ferrer and Goodman are both pretty eloquent in their critiques

I'm uncomfortable using the term "education" as a stand in for "schooling" though -- Education has always been a part of human societies and indeed the free exchange of ideas and learning is a fundamental part of society and any libertarian society worth being called such would maximize access to all sorts of different means of education and learning depending on the desires and skills of the community in question
