It makes sense. He hasn't developed the backbone yet that comes from asking girls out and getting rejected.
OP,
Ask her to prom. Asking girls out gets easier and easier with practice (and you will learn to do it in the most effective ways possible). Don't ask her through myspace though, ask her in person.
Oh yeah, and the longer you stay in the friend zone the harder it is to get out. So if you find yourself going that way with a girl the best thing is usually to make a move away from such things as soon as possible. Be aware that you are risking your friendship by doing so, but you gotta go after things you want in life.
